The alterations occurring in lipoprotein metabolism in diabetes have been described in detail, but the metabolism of cholesterol and bile acids has been less well characterized, and the results from the few previous studies are controversial. Obesity, in addition to predisposing to the development of diabetes, is associated with abnormal cholesterol metabolism. Accordingly, cholesterol metabolism was studied in obesity with and without type 2 diabetes, and in type 2 diabetes with and without overweight. In addition, the effects of weight reduction were studied on cholesterol and sterol metabolism in a non-stable state during fasting and also in subsequent steady state after a prolonged follow-up. Cholesterol absorption and cholesterol and bile acid synthesis were studied in 16 obese (BMI > 30 kg/m 2) type 2 diabetic patients and compared to 16 similarly obese controls to reveal the role of diabetes on cholesterol metabolism. The effects of body weight on cholesterol metabolism were investigated with 20 normal-weight (BMI ≤ 26.0 kg/m 2) and 44 overweight (BMI > 26.1 kg/m 2) type 2 diabetic patients. Cholesterol absorption was evaluated with the peroral dual isotope technique and …

The Effects of Atorvastatin Consumption on Biochemical Variables in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Pre-diabetes

Background and Aims: Atorvastatin may alter glycemic traits and lipid profiles. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of atorvastatin on biochemical variables in patients with type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes (borderline diabetes). Materials and Methods: This study included 80 individuals divided into five groups. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and pre-diabetes used atorvastatin 20...

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome in First-Degree Relatives of Patients with Type II Diabetes

Background & Aims: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and risk factors for diabetes, pre-diabetes and metabolic syndrome in first-degree relatives(FDRs) of patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: In a cross-sectional study between 2003 and 2005, 3228 of first-degree relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes (841 men and 2387 women) from Isfahan Endocrine and Metabolism Resear...

High-density lipoprotein at the interface of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disorders.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels, which is an independent cardiovascular risk factor. Low HDL cholesterol concentrations reflect a dysregulation in HDL metabolism, which is determined by the concerted action of different proteins, including cholesterol ester transfer protein, lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase, endothelial and ...

The association between serum lipids profile and HbA1c in type 2 diabetes mellitus in Tehran, Iran

Background and aims: Dyslipidemia is one of the major factors implicated in the development of the vascular complications of diabetes. In this study, it was evaluated the association between serum lipids profile and Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the serum lipid profile and...

Low synthesis and high absorption of cholesterol characterize type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE Streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes in experimental animals inhibits cholesterol synthesis and increases cholesterol absorption. In contrast to human type 2 diabetes, virtually no information is available on cholesterol synthesis and absorption in type 1 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We studied the variables of cholesterol metabolism in 27 patients with type 1 diabetes an...
